IntroWith the use of food banks on the rise in England, alongside social exclusion and declining health and fitness across all age ranges, we want to help our community fight back.
‘Let’s Cook!’ will create an equal opportunity for everyone to learn new skills, such as how to shop on a budget, how to cook well for less, essential kitchen skills while increasing social interaction within the community. Our industrial kitchen is the perfect venue to hold these classes, it offers a no fuss environment that allows people to relax, have fun and learn new skills. With your help, we will be able to put on free or subsidised classes for those most in need.
Sussex Chef is a catering company based in the heart of Sussex. We are all about good local produce, creating food experiences and making sure all our clients enjoy their journey with us. In 2012, Ben created Sussex Chef on a tiny budget. Today it is in high demand and one of the top event catering companies in Sussex.
Head Chef and business owner Ben Horle has over 18 years’ experience as a professional chef and 6 years as a business owner. Above all, Ben is a family man with a wife and two young children at home. Part of his passion for this project comes from experiencing the day to day struggle of feeding a family on a budget and not just making sure they get fed but that it is delicious and nutritious at the same time. With Ben’s experience in running professional demonstrations for companies such as Arla Food UK, he has seen the impact group cooking has on the participants and their lives. This has pushed Ben and the team to work hard to create an opportunity for our community and those most in need. Ben and the whole team at Sussex Chef pride themselves on using only the best, locally sourced produce and work very closely with local businesses to ensure everything is made with only the freshest and finest quality ingredients. While also supporting our local community and businesses.
Our dream goal is to raise enough funds to equip our facilities with the tools and staff needed to provide access to ‘Let’s Cook!’ for the local community with free and/or subsidised classes available to those most in need for a minimum of 6 months. ‘Let’s Cook!’ is a selection of cookery classes run throughout the year within the local community of Sussex hosted by our Founder and Head Chef Ben Horle. We have created 8 classes that meet the needs and wants of our community and those most in need. Each session is designed to focus on a separate set of skills to be mastered in the kitchen, they are available as a course of 8 or as a standalone class. In each session, there will also be a focus on a specific government, NHS guideline or healthy eating ethos, such as ‘Eat the Rainbow’, 5 a Day, Recommended Intake values, Best Before vs Use By, portion size and fridge/freezer times plus many more. Each participant will receive their very own ‘Let’s Cook!’ apron, laminated recipe cards, and enjoy a dedicated team of chefs and kitchen staff to teach them all the tricks of the trade. They even get to take your produce home! This is a project very close to our hearts and we would appreciate any help towards achieving our goals.
We need you!
To get this project on the road we are aiming to raise £12,000 With these funds we will be able to reach out to the local community, to put on demonstrations and free classes in local community halls, schools and at local events over the next 3 months. This will enable us to build up our presence and become a large part of the community we wish to help. Our aim is to create a fun and safe environment for those most in need to gain not only the practical skills of cooking but also enjoy the social interaction of the community and learn new life skills that will benefit the whole community in the future to come. These skills such as, healthy eating, how to shop on a budget and general kitchen skills will develop social change within the community by reducing social exclusion, creating a healthy living ethos and targeting those who are struggling the most while living on a budget in this economic climate. We plan to work very closely with local councils, doctors and healthcare professionals, we want to help our community and with you we can do it!
Where your money is going?
The money raised here will go towards employing a dedicated member of staff to run the project, this person will be the point of contact between the community and the project, will organise the classes and arrange the venues plus much more. This will also allow us to cover the costs of our chef, the produce, equipment and any promotional material need to get the project up and running.
£12,000 is a fraction of the funds that is really needed to put into communities across the country, all we can do is start local and hope that with your help we can make a difference. Our ultimate dream is to raise enough money in the future to allow us to create a space for regular drop in classes and also to cover the cost of fitting out our kitchen with the required equipment such as, food processors, induction hobs and kitchen knives for an intimate group of 8-10 people, having these facilities would also allow us to become completely mobile meaning we can reach out across the whole of the south east and deliver ‘Let’s Cook!’ to the local community in village halls, schools, charity events and those most in need. Our dream is for “Let’s Cook!” to reach as many people as possible and become self-sustaining with some of the profits from our other endeavours going towards the running costs
